Last week Studio Soüfflé attended the Business Startup Show in the Olympia Exhibition Centre in West London, .
There are many speakers and seminars there and lots of inspiring and fun things to get involved with if you are thinking about starting up a business or have an idea for an invention.

Some of the main speakers there are James Cann, Brad Burton and Rachel Elnaugh. We will have the privilege of working with Rachel Elnaugh in the next month for an event called The Big Om on 12/12/12. I believe there may be a few changes happening with the venue and hopefully they will be announcing the final place soon. For more details:

Back to the Business Startup Show... We did a little bit of guerilla marketing and made a Smiley face that is very much like the logo 4Networking, run by Brad Burton (http://www.4networking.biz/).
It inflates with a small fan that runs on batteries and was well received by the team.

BURNINGMAN 2012

We started working on a very interesting commission for a Jellyfish Art Car about 3 months ago. The brief was a little different to us because the client was interested in having a tensile structure. In the end we used tent poles instead of our normal method of using air to structure an object.

The challenge was to make the structure fit into a suitcase that can be carried on the airplane. It had to be under the baggage allowance and we managed to make it with 2kilos to spare!
There were strict power restrictions that we had to adhere to. So we spent a large amount of time researching the correct lighting for the piece.

The tentacles were made out of colourful layers of material over ripstop nylon and kept their shape using boning that is normally used for corsetry. They packed down into the suitcase small enough and then poped back out into shape for the set-up.

Some of our circus tent structures were also featured in this fantastic blog about structures at Burningman. They are amazing for camping in and inflate in a mater of minutes!

Below is a project we just completed for a pilot project by Isambard Poulson: http://www.isambard.com/?page_id=30

This Balloon will be painted by a group of young men who are part of Draper's Foyer, a hostel for young, homeless and unemployed people in Bethnal Green. Keep a watch out for it as it will be featured on the roof top of one of East London's popular building. Stay tuned for up-dates about this fantastic project as it develops :-)

This was a project Mahani and I worked on in 2010 for Matalan stores. This Giant shoe travelled around to different stores around the country attracting people to the shop.
So, on reflection and in conclusion, inflatables are AMAZING!

As a follow on to some of our previous posts about Fake Bake spray tan booths, we have been working on a simpler more user-friendly design. These can be branded with company logos and are the perfect traveling spray booth. Our goal is to make this item very easy to use, set-up, take down and clean. The whole structure will fit into a washing machine and will have a nice compact fan.
It inflates in about 45 seconds and is just as easy to take down and pack away...
For storage and transportation this station packs down into a bag that is approximately 45cm in diameter and 15cm high. In  round clamshell style bag, plus the fan.
We can make this item with any color from our range of materials to suit a specific brand and with logos printed on bag and back wall of structure.
We can also make this without the back wall for a fantastic entrance for a wedding, event or party!
Thanks for looking :-)

Hello all you lovely Glampers out there!
We would like to present to you our new design for comfortable, fun, easy to erect sleeping/chill out pods. The roof is transparent which is fantastic for natural light during the day time. For more privacy to keep it darker there is a easy to fit section that attaches just below the transparent top on the inside.

Previously we have worked on the designing, prototyping and production of an inflatable portable spray tan booth for Fake Bake, please see photo...
We are currently in the process of designing and prototyping a new similar product and would like feedback from experienced beauticians in how to make this product the best it can be. If you can take a moment to fill out our survey (link below) we will give you 10% discount on any future orders.

Studio Soüfflé made this tent for the Burningman Festival in Nevada, USA: http://burningman.com/

As a regular attendee of this fantastically unique festival I have used a selection of these tents for three years now with amazing effect, ease of use and comfort.
Arriving to the site I always witness large groups of people who have been laboring away for many hours, days even, in incredible amounts of heat and blazing sun and dust and wind storms. Wielding many tools, power tools and big pieces of wood and huge amounts of heavy tarpaulin materials they are in the process of setting up shade structures.
Then I rock up with my inflatable. The inflatables go up in a mater of minutes, then they just need a few 10 inch metal tent steaks pounded into the loops that are around the base. The structure is very securely fastened, even in the strongest of winds and in the Black Rock Desert it can get pretty dramatic to say the least! I have not yet had an issue with the elements being a problem with this.
The inflatables do however need a power source to keep them inflated, but once up and properly connected they are fantastic for all your festival needs and provide perfect privacy and relaxation times! Also, we are currently working on finding fan systems that are quiet, lightweight, affordable and perfect for many different similar settings. Contact us for more information on fun easy festival Glamping! www.studiosouffle.com

The inside of this tent was made with purple material, but in the day time the colors from the outside reflected through creating a pretty nice effect :-)

This is an inflatable arch ("Hot Wheels Track" as you can see from the inspiration below).

Friday 20 April 2012

Almost any object is possible to make with inflatable technology :-)
This is an inflatable Chinook helicopter, it was made for the Royal Military Tournament: http://britishmilitarytournament.com/

The biggest issue we have had with inflatables is getting the material printed on. This was hand painted with special paints to keep it looking authentic even though it was 1/3rd the size of a normal Chinook helicopter.

On Wednesday we attended the Visual Merchandising and Display show:
There were some great visual display companies there and we managed to catch up with Millington Associates:
Minki Balinki:

And lots others :-)

Monday 16 April 2012

In 2009 Mahani and I worked together on a project for Fake Bake. Our mission was to create an exciting spray tan booth that is portable and easy for home tan set up. We tried many styles and ended up with the final gold one below, this was a prototype that was later mass produced...

I just found a video of how to set this booth up. Plus, lots more on similar projects to come!!

Friday 13 April 2012

This was a fantastic project that was done for Craylands...
What a great project to work on! The print on the inside is butterflies, the windows are made out of colored acrylic and as you can see this type of structure is perfect for community events. It is an A-symmetrical "tripod" Photos provided by PenttinenSchone

'Paladine the Knight' has landed in Malaysia :-)
The Betadome show is happening this week, check it out here:  Betadome FB

We have been asked if we might be able to turn Paladine into a Zebra for a different show that is being held on Zebra Walk... of course we can!
We also sent in the box a nice little star, seen below....
This star is for sale on Etsy.. here is the link for our Etsy shop: Star on Etsy

Thursday 5 April 2012

Just finished this Knight/black horse chess piece, its based on the larger design we did for the Secret Garden Party. Unfortunately we did not get commissioned for the Secret Garden Party piece, but we decided to make this little version anyway :-). This just got sent to Malaysia today for our sister company called Betadome: http://betadome.com.my/

Betadome is showing their new dome to the public on the 12th and 13th of April at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort in Kuala Lumpur. This horse will be auctioned off during the event.

Monday 2 April 2012

Here is a giant blood vessel inflatable tunnel for a science exhibit in America... The pictures are a little dark because we inflated this in the street outside a studio we used to work in. It was pretty late at night cause the deadlines for projects are often very tight so we work most hours of the day.

Friday 30 March 2012

Although Soufflé is a word used mostly in baking, the definition, as seen below, is perfect for our inflatables company :-) We use an airflow system for our structures, meaning there is a fan constantly blowing air into the form to keep it inflated. Inflatables are amazing because they have so many benefits:

Why Inflatable?
> Pack down small enough to fit into a backpack.
> Lightweight and quick to install.
> No tooling is involved in the production hence the freedom to create organic and asymmetrical forms economically.
> Brings joy to everyone :)

Why Studio Soüfflé?
> Mahani & Gaia have 9 years of experience combined in the design and production of stunning inflatable structures and objects.
> Each project will be given bespoke care and attention to achieve the individual client needs.
> Studio Soüfflé have the experience and expertise to turn any humble object (i.e a potty or a shoe) into a masterpiece.

[soo-fley, soo-fley] souf•flé
1) a light baked dish made fluffy with beaten egg whites
combined with egg yolks, white sauce, and fish, cheese,
or other ingredients.
2) 1813, from Fr. soufflé , noun use of pp. of souffler
“puff up,” from L.sufflare, from sub- “under, up
from under” + flare “to blow”.

Tuesday 27 March 2012

This was a fantastic project Mahani and I worked on for FAB Ice-cream. At the top of both of the structures is the chocolate section which is covered with screen printed sprinkles and the material had to be specially dyed to the correct color. Rip-stop is not easy to dye or to print on. The first lot of dying came out the completely wrong color and the sprinkles were very difficult too, we had a hard time with the inks and the coverage. So after many trials and experiments we found the right combination of techniques. In the end though it turned out really well and the client was pleased with the outcome of both of these structures, we were too. :-)
